The Importance of Record Keeping and Pedigree Transparency in Preservation of Breeds

Preservation isn’t just about what you see in front of you. It’s about what came before it.
Every well-bred terrier represents generations of decisions — some good, some not — and the only way to understand those decisions is through accurate, honest record keeping.
Pedigrees are more than names on paper. They are a map of traits, tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses carried forward over time. Without that map, breeding becomes guesswork.
Good record keeping allows breeders to:
Track consistency across generations
Identify patterns — both positive and negative
Make informed decisions instead of reactive ones
Preserve type intentionally, not accidentally
Transparency matters just as much.
No line is perfect. Every program has strengths and areas to improve. Being honest about both is what allows the breed as a whole to move forward.
When records are incomplete or unclear, it doesn’t just affect one breeder — it affects anyone working with those lines in the future.
For a breed built on purpose, that kind of clarity isn’t optional.
It’s part of the responsibility.
Preservation doesn’t happen in a single generation. It happens when each generation leaves behind enough information for the next to do better.
